Budget gets mixed response

Some say enforcement wings were not strengthened to check graft
Karimnagar: The much anticipated budget of Telangana state presented on Wednesday evoked mixed response from people in Karimnagar city. While a few lauded the way in which funds were allocated to different sectors in the budget, some others opined that the government neglected certain key areas in Karimnagar district. Telangana Economic Forum president Nedunuri Kanakaiah lauded Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandra-sekhar Rao and finance minister Etela Rajender for earmarking Rs 48,000 crore towards ‘planned expenditure’ in the budget.
Mr Rao’s rationality in allocation of 48 per cent of funds in the budget towards planned expenditure is appreciable, he said. This will help in improvement of the agriculture, irrigation and public transportation sectors and it will lead to the economic growth of the state in the long run. Mr. Kanakaiah said he was impressed with the money earmarked for holding video-conferences, enhanced social security pensions, laying on pipelines to supply safe drinking water to rural areas through the water grid and improve water resources like ponds and tanks.
Meanwhile, Karimnagar Consumer Council President N. Srinivas said both health and education sectors were neglected in the budget. The government-run hospitals in Karimnagar district are not equipped with quality infrastructure forcing patients to rely on private hospitals, the managements of which are fleecing the poor. The recently established Satavahana University was not allocated any funds for improvement, he pointed out.
Further, the government sidelined strengthening of enforcement and vigilance agencies in order to eradicate corruption among public servants and other offences by owners of hotels, he lamented.
