Vaiko slams Kerala for Pambar dam

He urged government to take steps to prevent construction

Chennai: MDMK general secretary Mr Vaiko on Wednesday condemned Kerala government’s move to construct a dam across Pambar as it would affect flow to Amaravathy dam in the state.

The Pambar is an inter-state river that originates from Anamudi and flows eastwards, joining the Chinnar to reach the Amaravathy reservoir in TN.

In a statement here, Mr Vaiko said that the dam, catering to the irrigation needs of over 60,000 acres in Tirupur and Karur districts of the state, received water from Pambar, Thenaar and Chinnar. He said the Kerala government has now proposed a dam at Pattichery on TN-Kerala border and Kerala CM Oommen Chandy had laid the foundation stone for the project on Monday.

“If this dam is constructed at a height of 75 ft and width of 440 ft, water flow of about 2 tmcft to Amaravathy dam will be affected,” he said. Kerala had not obtained clearances, Mr Vaiko alleged.

Stating that it was ‘illegal’ for Kerala to build a dam without the consent of lower riparian state of TN, he urged the government to take steps to prevent its neighbour from going ahead with construction.
