Students’ band brings pride to Kerala police
These young prodigies are part of the State’s first-ever Student Police Cadet (SPC) band troupe
Kollam: Many a programme organized by the Police and the Government in the district witness a bunch of ‘young police officers’ playing the band. These young prodigies are part of the State’s first-ever Student Police Cadet (SPC) band troupe formed by the students of Pooyappally High School here.
The SPC band team comprises 23 students trained directly under the supervision of Kunjumon Thomas, a sub-inspector of Police from the III battalion of Adoor KAP camp. The rigorous training these students get on holidays and evenings is what shapes them into a perfect band.
The school has as many as 88 students in the SPC team, 22 boys and girls each from Standard Eight and Nine. The SPC team also gets training in swimming during the April-May vacation. The team members also have bagged the first prize in the district level aquatic competition. In addition, the team gets training in PT and Parade from civil police officers V. R. Sreechand and S. Sujatha, the drill instructors.
“The SPC band in the school which is the only one of its kind in the State even has band uniforms. The band team also performs at various official programmes including those by the Police,” said V. Rani, community police officer (CPO) in the school who is assisted by A.N. Girija, the additional CPO.
