Karnataka Home Minister attacks media, says rape stories shown only for TRPs
Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister KJ George sparked controversy by blaming the media for highlighting only rape news and projecting Bengaluru as 'a rape city' to increase TRP ratings.
According to reports, George said that the media is only focusing on rape stories to boost TRP's maintaining that the school management must be held accountable for crimes happening on school campus.
"Nowadays people in the media are playing only these kinds of news to increase their TRPs. How many such incidents have taken place? After the Nirbhaya incident Section 376 has a wider definition. School management should take care of whatever happens inside their schools. Bangalore is now being branded as rape city," said George.
George’s remarks came on the day the school, where a 6-year-old student was raped last week, re-opened with intensified security measures.
Senior advocate Abha Singh deplored the minister’s unwarranted comment, saying it was a ploy to cover up his inefficiency in checking crimes against young girls and women.
"Karnataka Government has been unable to control the increasing crimes against women in the state. And to cover up for their inefficiency and unable to maintain law and order, Karnataka Home Minister is making such a deplorable statement that media is showing rapes to increase their TRP," she said.
"Rather than appreciating the media, he is trying to condemn the media, because it is his inefficiency which is there for everyone to see, where a girl-two-year-old, eight-year-old-is being raped mercilessly in schools and they have been unable to maintain law and order in the state," she added.
