IIM likely to be set up at Gambheeram near Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam: The proposed premier institute, IIM, is likely to come up in Gambheeram, 30 kms away from city. Highly placed sources at APIIC, pointed that the high-level panel appointed by Union HRD ministry to select suitable site had zeroed in 140 acre site at Gambheeram.
A high-level panel headed by Union HRD ministry’s joint secretary Praveen Prakash visited Vizag on September 19 and 20 to select suitable land for IIM.
The panel visited sites of 150 acres each identified by the district administration, at Purushottapuram, Gambheeram and Chinamushidiwada all in 30 kms radius of the city.
Interestingly, the panel members also paid a visit to Kapuluppada though it was not part of the list prepared by the district administration.
After careful evaluation of the three sites on various parameters, the panel said to have zeroed in the site at Gambheeram.
The panel also looked into the facilities available here and also feasibility to begin IIM classes at a temporary accommodation from the next academic year onwards. They have examined various facilities at Andhra University.
“The site for establishment of IIM was almost finalised and the state government had asked us to surrender certain portion of land belonging to the corporation at Gambheeram for it. We are going to hand over the said land very soon,” a top official of APIIC told Deccan Chronicle.
IIM is one among the 11 prestigious national repute institutions the Centre promised to establish in Andhra Pradesh as part of bifurcation deal.
