4 months on, still no Anna canteens

Cabinet sub-committee had finalised the menu more than 2 months ago

Hyderabad: The much hyped Anna canteens proposed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu have failed to take off four months after being approved by the state Cabinet.

Mr Naidu wanted the Anna Canteens to be launched from October 2 coinciding with Gandhi Jayanthi, but the project has been delayed.

The Cabinet sub-committee, headed by civil supplies minister Paritala Sunitha was given the task of setting up 35 canteens in the first for the poor to get breakfast, lunch and dinner at nominal prices.

However, the Cabinet sub-committee has failed to do so. Officials defended the delay citing the impact of Cyclone Hudhud. They said ministers had to rush to the affected areas.

“Now, the Janmabhoomi programme is in progress. On the directions of Mr Naidu all the ministers are heading the programme in their respective districts. Anna canteens may be launched any time after the Janmabhoomi programme,” officials said.

The Cabinet sub-committee had also tentatively finalised the price of the menu nearly two months ago.
