Kochi: Customs officials at Kochi airport seized nearly 6.5 kg of gold valued at Rs 2 cr on Wednesday, when they arrested a Kasaragode native who tried to smuggle in the yellow metal by concealing it in an electronic equipment.
The 25-year-old youth had arrived by a Qatar Airways flight from Dubai via Doha at 9 am, said Customs Commissioner K.N.Raghavan.
The passenger was intercepted at the exit of the Arrival Hall, on suspicion that he was carrying contraband. When questioned by Customs officers, whether he had gold or other contraband with him, he answered in the negative. Thereafter a detailed search was held.
“We recovered 56 gold bars weighing approximately 6.5 kg which were concealed in electrical transformers and also in the form of beads chains, tiger balm cap, watch strap, bag zip, key chain ring, etc,” the officer said.
The gold bars were wrapped in carbon paper and cello adhesive tape and cleverly concealed in the cavity between the core and the outer cover of the transformers.
