Usage of vegetables reduced
Rise of prices has led to less usage of vegetables
Visakhapatnam: With many vegetables becoming costly post-Hudhud in the city, city folks are reducing consumption of veggies in their diet. Nutritionists warn that while reducing consumption of veggies may lessen the pressure on monthly household budget, it will have impact on health resulting in increased medical expenses.
R. Rekha, nutritionist and a faculty of Andhra University’s Department of Food and Nutrition, said, “If people are reducing their intake of some vegetables, either due to increased prices or non-availability, they should consume more of what is easily available.
For example, if green leafy vegetables which are rich in fiber, calcium, iron and a few other minerals are not available or not being bought due to high prices, it can be compensated by increased consumption of cabbage which is also rich in the same but not as much as green leafy vegetables. In the same manner, if someone does not buy lemons due to increase in prices, it can be compensated with gooseberry which has almost the same nutrition value like lemon.
