Ram Sethu to be intact, says Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
He ruled out the possibility of demolishing the sacred bridge
Chennai: Union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the Sethusamudram shipping channel oroject would be implemented without disturbing the Ram Sethu. He ruled out the possibility of demolishing the sacred bridge.
“The project will be implemented without hurting religious sentiments of people,” Mr Gadkari said.
The project, which was mooted by the NDA government led by Atal Behari Vajpayee, ran into trouble during the UPA regime and was shelved. But Modi government has rekindled interest in it.
Mr Gadkari, who was inspecting the project area in a hovercraft, said they were considering alternative alignments for the canal across the Palk Straits.
He said five alternative studies had been carried out by experts. Based on this, a final report would be presented to the Prime Minister.
