Officials begin survey for expansion of port

State government has made it clear that development of ports is on its list of priorities
MACHILIPATNAM: Revenue officials have started surveying government land in Chinakaragraharam and adjoining villages for Machilipatnam port, following a requisition by the infrastructure and investment department to revenue department seeking transfer of land so that it could be allotted to the port. The government had decided to hand over 3,100 acres of land in the first phase to the port. So far, 412 acres have been allotted.
Of the 5,300 acres of land proposed to be allotted to the port, 2,400 acres state-owned. Some of it has been encroached. It may be noted that former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had set the foundation stone for Machilipatnam port at Chinakaragraharam in April, 2008. Even after six years and a relay fast observed by Bandar Port Sadhana Samiti for over 500 days, the work is yet to take off.
Former chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s directions on acquisition of land for the part remained unheeded. Now, the land survey has gained importance since the state government is made it clear that development of ports is on its list of priorities.
Sadhana Samiti secretary D. Sriramachandra Murthy said that he was optimistic this time around since Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had, during his Pedana tour, vowed to start the port work within six months of coming to power.
