Dr Singh getting highest civilian award in Japan. National media ignores it
New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday launched a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he congratulated his predecessor Manmohan Singh for being chosen for one of Japan’s top national awards saying that the “world values work not just rhetoric”.
“Dr Manmohan Singh 1st Indian-Receive Ja-pan’s highest civilian Honour! Congrats! World values work not just rhetoric,” AICC general secretary Ajay Maken posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Mr Maken also accused the media of ignoring the rare honour to the party leader and former PM.
“Dr Singh getting highest civilian award in Japan. National media ignores it! The Nation Wants to Know: Is Media Patriotic or just BJP Bhakt?” he said in another tweet.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi congratulated Dr Singh upon being awarded Japan’s high civilian honour — The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers.
“A rare and well-deserved recognition of a statesman by the government of Japan, the award to Dr Singh makes us, as indeed the entire nation proud,” she said.
Mrs Gandhi said that the award rightly recognises Dr Singh’s distinguished and significant contributions towards enhancement of relati-ons and the promotion of friendship between Jap-an and India for 35 years.
