Where are the plastic roads, asks Madras High Court
Chennai: The Madras high court on Monday directed the state government to file before it within two weeks, the exact location where it has laid 1,104 km of plastic roads between 2011-12 and 2012-13 and 260 km in 2013-14 with photographs.
The court was responding to the submission made by the state government that to make TN a plastic free state, it was decided to use plastic waste collected by local bodies for relaying roads. Plastic roads were laid at a length of 1,104 km during the year 2011-12 to 2012-13 at a cost of Rs 142.88 crore. During 2013-14, a sum of Rs 50 crore was sanctioned for relaying of plastic roads at a length of 260km, the affidavit added.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan was hearing a PIL by advocate M. Akila, which sought to direct authorities to take action against retailers who sell plastic carry bags that don’t meet prescribed standards to their customers.
