Hyderabad EFL University rape case: Rapists didn’t expect victim to go to cops
Hyderabad: The two young men, who were arrested by the OU police for raping their friend, were produced before the court and sent to judicial remand on Tuesday. They have reportedly confessed that after raping the woman, they thought that they would be able to “handle” the situation by “talking it out” since she was their close friend.
“The duo 21-year-old Nitin Solasamudram, and K. Raj Simha, 24, have been produced before the court. They have been sent to jail for 14 days on Judicial remand,” said OU police inspector V. Ashok Reddy.
During interrogation, the duo confessed that they did not expect the victim to lodge a complaint against them. The men said that they were confident that they would be able to “handle the situation.” The duo claimed that the victim had come to the hostel to meet another friend, and she was returning, she bumped into them. They invited her to Nitin’s room for a cigarette, and she agreed. When the victim, who was already in an inebriated condition, passed out, they raped her.
Meanwhile, the Eflu Teachers’ Association demanded that the university should set up a committee for gender sensitivity. They also said the University should not start moral policing taking advantage of the situation. The association members met the VC and discussed the issue. They have also expressed their solidarity with the rape victim.
On Tuesday night, tension mounted on the campus when students protested against the Vice-Chancellor when she refused to speak to them. Police officials had to control the students who tried stop VC’s car.
The students said that the administration should have a dialogue with the students.
“Whenever any incident takes place on the campus, the administration takes steps without consulting the students. The absence of correspondence with students is a big problem,” said a PhD scholar Rose Sebastian.
Girls restricted from entering boys’ hostel
Eflu officials on Tuesday said that from now on, no outsider will be allowed on the campus. Moreover, entry of girls into the boys’ hostel will also be restricted. In a press release, the Eflu officials said that these measures were to ensure the safety of the students. “The university has a task force on gender sensitisation as well as an internal complaint cell. Necessary steps will be taken to increase awareness. The university also has a functioning counselling centre to provide support and guidance for students against any form of discrimination,” the release said.
