Clothes from anything @ NIFT Hyderabad Fashion Olympiad
Fashion Olympiad saw weeks of hard work and creative compilations from students
Hyderabad: Imagine creating garments from plastic wrap, paper mache or Diwali lanterns. While one might think it’s a difficult task, for the students of NIFT Hyderabad, it was pretty commonplace. The NIFT Hyderabad Fashion Olympiad showcased some unique fashion ideas from the students.
The Olympiad, held on October 30 and 31, was not just a random fashion show as the specific themes given to the different departments that put together eight different events, saw weeks of hard work and creative compilations from the students.
From an impromptu fashion walk where the participants had to style the models according to the theme given to them on the spot to quizzes based on brands and the students’ understanding of the fashion business, the events saw huge participation.
Udit Pathak, who won the Fashion Marathon event along with his teammate Ankit Chaturvedi, says, “For our event, we had to make garments out of just 20 per cent fabric and the theme was modern tradition. So we created our own concept to show the evolution of man. The idea was to show how fast everything was changing around us. We created the garment from plastic table cloth and gave it a design of ‘processing chips’. Our jacket was made of paper mache in a way that it looked like leather. Even the judges asked us if it was leather.”
And Fashion Marathon was not the only event that had a different approach, Fashion Wall, a new event introduced this year was about creating a garment from textile materials. And winner Akash Rajput definitely took it a notch higher with his ‘bird’s nest’ garment that he made out of loose threads.
“We had to create a display with the theme bird’s nest and I decided to create the ensemble with loose threads of yellow and purple,” he says.
Moving on from the displays was the photography competition ‘Click O Mania’ that saw a lot of entries. Winner Ayant Verma, who was also the organiser from his department, says, “The idea was to capture street fashion and I wanted to frame a photograph that looked as if it was shot in the UK. We went to Hitec City and captured a photograph there in the middle of the road with the models dressed up in their fashionable best. It was my decision to keep it a monochrome photo, as that made it different.
“The first and second prize winners of each event will soon be on their way to Delhi to compete with the winners from the other NIFT colleges across the country for the National Olympiad,” says Ayant.
