UGC seeks barrier free education
The UGC asked universities to earmark funds from its General Development Assistance
Hyderabad: The UGC has asked universities to file status reports on the disabled friendliness of their campuses. The UGC asked universities to earmark funds from its General Develo-pment Assistance to ensure barrier free education.
Most institutions still don't provide barrier free educational facilities. However, Unive-rsity of Hyderabad (UoH) last year received about '6 crore from the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to improve accessibility for disabled students.
Osmania University too had sought funds from the government for improving facilities for disabled students. After the Bombay High Court verdict in the case of a disabled student the UGC wrote to universities on the subject. The commission asked for a status report on the subject within 15 days.
