No Aadhaar cards, no loan waiver

The government has taken this decision to identify bogus accounts

Hyderabad: Around 18 lakh farmers in Andhra Pradesh are not likely to benefit from the loan waiver scheme as they do not have Aadhaar cards. The figure was revealed after banks completed listing eligible account holders for loan waiver on Saturday evening. The state government has decided to exclude farmers not having Aadhaar cards from the waiver scheme.

The government decision comes despite the Supreme Court’s directions to not make Aadhaar cards mandatory for availing government schemes and subsidies. The government has taken this decision to identify bogus accounts. After correcting errors in the data, around 15 lakh bank account holders have been declared eligible for loan waiver. However, banks made errors in entering the data, making some farmers ineligible. The government has sent back the data to the banks for corrections. The government will submit details of bank accounts of farmers eligible for loan waiver to the State Residence Data Hub for scrutiny, which will put out the final list. The list will be put up for objections and the official list will be announced four days later.
