Farmers’ opposition gaining support from organisations

They promised to provide legal aid to farmers

Vijayawada: Opposition against setting up AP capital at Tulluru is gradually gaining traction with organisations like the Bezwada Bar Association joining in.

A BBA team is touring the mandal on a request from farmers and educating the locals on their rights. They said there was no mention of “land pooling” in the Constitution and that the government could not take their land at will.

They promised to provide legal aid to farmers in case the government forcefully took over their land. Some human rights activists and social workers have also joined the protesters.

When contacted, BBA president Sampara Durga Srinivas, said that contrary to the claims of government and officials that most of the farmers were accepting land pooling, half of them were opposed to it.

“They are confused about what to do to protect their inseparable possessions,” he said. Mr Srinivas visited Rayapudi, Mandadam and other villages along with colleagues.
Mr Srinivas said that the Mangalagiri Bar Association had expressed its solidarity with the farmers and Guntur Bar Association was contemplating giving its support.

He said Dr N. Jayaprakash Narayan of the Lok Satta would visit the riverfront villages shortly in an effort to highlight the “arbitrary decision” of the government. Dr Narayan may come up with an alternative proposal, he said.
