Call for common education system
The protest took place across eighteen states
Hyderabad: Calling for a ban on corporatisation of education, over 1,500 activists, including professors and research scholars, participated in the All India Shiksha Sangharsh Yatra on Sunday.
The protests took place in 18 states, in support of a common school system. The activists, including representatives from over 150 organisations, took part in a rally from Bhagya Memorial High School in Malakpet, which culminated in a public meeting at the Nizam College grounds.
“Our main objective is to call on for a uniform education curriculum. We are protesting the privatisation, corporatisation and saffronisation of education,” said R. Ravichandra, secretary of the organising committee here.
“We want universities to be run by government funds and all the private institutions must be slowly brought under government control,” he said. The yatra is looking for a common school system and equal education for all children.
The yatra was pioneered by civil rights activist Anand Teltumde, who is also a professor at IIT Kharagpur and grandson of B.R. Ambedkar.
Writer Vara Vara Rao, who addressed the public meeting, said, “There is a need to take off all the boards and create one common curriculum and provide equal amenities for all the students.”
Professor Haragopal, who joined the protest at Kanyakumari, said, “This is our struggle against commercialisation and communalisation of education. Every school must be equipped with enough infrastructure and every school must provide quality education.”
