ISL: Ozbey inspires Goa to first ISL win
Goan side came from one goal deficit to win the match
Margao: Substitute Tolgay Ozbey scored an injury time goal as dominant FC Goa rallied to beat Delhi Dynamos 2-1 for their maiden win in the inaugural Indian Super League here on Saturday.
Ozbey snatched the winner for Goa in the 90th minute. Earlier, Shaikh Jewel Raja (72nd) had equalised for the hosts, skipper Mads Junker having put the Dynamos ahead in the seventh minute itself. The win took FC Goa up the table with four points from five matches, while Delhi remained on six points from five games.
Goa coach Zico made three changes bringing in Mandar Rao Dessai, Romeo Fernandes and Jewel Raja and the move paid off as the trio put the opposition under pressure, especially in the second half to post a stunning win.The hosts, who were looking for their first victory, started on a promising note as they made in-roads and had two early chances to take the lead but striker Miroslav Slepicka failed on both occasions.
The visitors, on the other hand, played a composed game and tried to catch the rival defence on the wrong foot with counter-attacks.The Dynamos’ ploy paid off as they took the lead in the seventh minute when Junker scored from his second attempt. The home team got a double blow when they lost playmaker Andre Santos, who was injured while going for a tackle with Stijin Houben.
But that did not deter FC Goa, who continued to enjoy midfield superiority and came up with a couple of good moves. The tale of missed chances though continued as Miroslav Slepicka first saw his header deflected by a rival defender and later, Jewel Raja missed an open chance after being fed by Romeo Fernandes’ cross from the right. The trend continued in the second half as FC Goa made repeated forays but their strikers failed to utilise the chances.
