Tamil Nadu Congress gets new chief, may split
G.K Vasan to spell out plans tomorrow
Chennai: Veteran Congress leader and former union minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan will on Sunday take over the reins of TNCC as its new chief following the sudden and dramatic exit of B S. Gnanadesikan, a G.K. Vasan loyalist. Even as a section of Congressmen rejoiced his appointment at Sathyamurthy Bhavan, TNCC headquarters, here, former union minister Vasan made an ominous announcement that he would unveil his plans on Monday after consulting his lieutenants.
Mr Elangovan’s appointment has been swift, shutting the doors of any rapprochement for Gnanadesikan who quit on October 30. “I am happy that the high command has appointed the new president so fast. Normally it takes many days… I have no regrets stepping down,” said Mr Gnanadesikan. Congress general secretary Mukul Wasnik, in charge of the party affairs in Tamil Nadu, announced Elangovan’s appointment in Delhi. The new PCC chief said he would soon meet all the senior leaders, including Vasan and Gnanadesikan, apparently to secure the ‘elusive’ unity in the party.
Meanwhile, Mr Vasan along with Mr Gnanadesikan addressed a crowded press conference at his Alwarpet bungalow to announce that he had begun the process of consulting party cadres and leaders on the issue of the high command ‘sidelining’ the state unit and “consistently ignoring the feelings of cadres and leaders” and announce his decision on Monday. There has been some speculation that he would quit the Congress and revive the Tamil Maanila Congress founded by his late father G. K. Moopanar.
