Lawyers against mobile tower on High Court grounds
Engineers invited to clarify on health hazards
Kochi: Lawyers may be used to appearing in court both for and against those opposing installation of mobile towers in the state, but when a private mobile company came up with the idea of installing a tower near the high court campus, they made no bones about where they stood in the matter and fought tooth and nail to stop it.
The plan was to install the tower on land occupied by the Golden Jubilee Chamber complex adjacent to the high court, but most lawyers came out against it, fearing it could put their health at risk and it was dropped some months ago after the general body of the Chamber voted against it. But a new row erupted recently after some lawyers invited the engineers of the private mobile company to the general body to clarify on the health hazards of having a mobile tower in their midst.
The matter was finally set to rest at a meeting convened on Friday by the Chambers’ board of governors, which decided to say no to the project once and for all. The concern was apparently for the over 1000 people, including litigants and other staff who frequent the Chamber’s 530 room every day.
Advocate M R Nandakumar , who is secretary of the Kerala High Court Advocates Association, says that the division bench of the high court was not against setting up the mobile tower on its campus. Advocate, K P Pradeep, however, makes his opposition to installing a mobile tower in the high court campus clear. “The claim that the tower will improve the coverage of mobile phones is foolish justification,” he adds indignantly.
