Experience a visual feast at Nattika beach kite festival
Kitemakers from across country to participate
THRISSUR: Kite fliers and spectators are in for a visual treat at the Nattika beach kite festival organised by Nattika Grama Panchayat.
Anil Pulikkal, panchayat president, said those who would love to fly kites could join in on Sunday and Monday. Expert kite makers from all over India are participating in the fest.
“The two-day event will create a riot of colours in the sky. Professional kite-flying experts from across India and the world will take part in the festival, which will be held between 12 pm and 6 pm,” said Pulikkal.
The highlight of the festival is the 110-foot-long ‘Kathakali’ kite, weighing 12.5 kg. The kite, sporting the face of a Kathakali artiste has been designed by Abdulla Maliyekkal, captain, ‘One India Kite’ team.
New Zealander Peter Lynn, a Guinness Book record holder for the largest kite and manufacturer and distributor of inflatable kites, made the kite which costs Rs 1.5 lakh.
It was Lynn, who gave Maliyekkal the idea of designing a kite unique to the culture and traditional values of Kerala.
“I showed him a Kathakali face and he said ‘that’s what I should take around the world’ ,” said Maliyekkal, who won a prize at the Weifang International kite festival.
The festival is being jointly organized by JCA Thriprayar and One India Kite Team. The festival would provide training to those who interested in kite flying, the organizers said.
