Rejoice in Aippasi bounty

Shiva temples in the state are gearing up for Annabhishekam
Chennai: With the northeast monsoon in full blast, Aippasi, the Tamil month from October 18 to November 16, this year has been quite fruitful.
True to the maxim, Aippasi adai mazhai (heavy rain), Tamil Nadu this year, has received 30 per cent excess rainfall till now. While heavy rains left reservoirs in the districts brimming, flood alerts have been sounded in the western districts.
On the flip side, bountiful rains have also left several acres of samba and thaladi crops submerged in rainwater in the delta districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.
In metros, incessant rains and thundershowers have left several roads including arterial stretches, flooded, exposing the civic body’s indifference to laying proper stormwater drains and repairing potholed roads.
The patchwork hurriedly done in a few hours seems to have only worsened the situation. Meanwhile, Aippasi also witnessed the symbolic slaying of the three demons, Ravana and Narakasura during the Deepavali celebrations and Surapadman in the Kandha Shasti festival at Tiruchendur.
Shiva temples in the state are gearing up for Annabhishekam (adorning the presiding deity with cooked rice) on full moon day.
The annual ritual is believed to bring in bountiful rain and help devotees get rid of their problems and relieve them from cycles of birth.
The birth anniversary of King Raja Raja Chola born in Aippasi with sadayam nakshataram is celebrated as Sadhya vizha in Thanjavur. Aippasi, the seventh month in the Tamil calendar, has a judicious mix of celebrations and austerity, bringing life-giving rain and seed to the earth.
