19 injured as car rams into crowd

The driver of the vehicle has been detained by the police

KOCHI: Nineteen persons including 16 school students have suffered injuries when a car rammed into a group of people waiting for a bus near the Karukutty Railway station junction enar Angamaly at the NH-47 on Thursday evening. The accident took place around 5 pm when an Innova car going towards the Thrissur side lost control and jumped the median and rammed into the crowd.
The occupants of the vehicle also suffered minor injuries, a police official said. The driver of the vehicle has been detained by the police.
The students of St. Joseph’s Girls High School waiting for the bus bore the brunt of the accident. A girl identified as Amritha had suffered multiple fractures was rushed to Specialists Hospital in Ernakulam while others admitted in the Little Flower Hospital at Angamaly.
The accident created a major traffic snarl in the highway for nearly two hours with the local people blocking the roads. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded with local people converging on the street with a television channel flashing a report that two students succumbed to injuries. The crowd also assembled before the LF hospital where the injured students were admitted adding to the problems.
