UPSC gets 3 weeks to explain DGP appointments

Telangana is still continuing with its temporary DGP

Hyderabad: The Union Public Service Commission on Wednesday submitted before the Hyderabad bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal that it will explain its role in appointment of DGPs to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The UPSC has sought three weeks time to file an affidavit in the DGPs appointment row.

A two-member bench co-mprising B. Venkateswara Rao (judicial) and Ranja-na Chowdary (administration) was hearing a plea by two senior IPS officers S.A. Huda and T.P. Das challenging the appointment of J.V. Ramudu as regular DGP to AP and Anurag Sharma as in-charge DGP to Telangana.

Earlier, the Centre has submitted before the tribunal that none of the two states can appoint a permanent DGP at this stage because what they have now is a team of officials allotted to them on temporary basis pending final division of cadre between the two states.

The bench granted three weeks to the UPSC to explain its role.

The AP government has defended its action in making Mr Ramudu as permanent DGP, contending that it has appointed the DGP following due procedure in accordance with law and the guidelines of the Apex Court in Prakash Singh’s case.

Telangana is still continuing with its temporary DGP while the AP went ahead and appointed its DGP on a permanent basis.

The petitioners found fault with the role of the UPSC, alleging that it had played a fraudulent role in allowing the AP to appoint a regular DGP based on temporary cadre allocation.

The bench granted three weeks to the UPSC to explain its role.
