Salem traders want battered roads repaired
Traders and residents of Sevvapet staged road roko
Salem: Traders and residents of Sevvapet, a commerical hub in Salem, staged a road roko, demanding immediate repair for the rain-battered roads in the area. Around 7 am on Wednesday, scores of traders, autorickshaw drivers and residents suddenly squatted on the Sevvapet road, urging the corporation to repair the slushy, non-motorable road. The protestors said the road had been dug up for underground drai nage and mobile phone cable laying works about a year ago and had been temporarily closed with mud.
With rains flooding the dug-up roads, the Sevvapet to government hospital road stretch has turned non-motorable. Trucks and goods carriages are unable to ply on the road, leading to business losses, claimed the traders. However, ward councillor Margabandhu and assistant commissioner of police Rajendran rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors. The councillor said '55 lakh had been earmarked to carry out repairs of the potholed road and work will begin soon. After the councillor's assurance, the agitiating traders and residents dispersed.
