Four die as monsoon fury rages

Four people including an elderly woman in Coimbatore and couple in Salem lost their lives
Coimbatore-Salem: As western Tamil Nadu reels under monsoon fury, four people including an elderly woman in Coimbatore and couple in Salem lost their lives while 95 goats were swept away in the flash floods on Tuesday night. In Coimbatore city, a 65-year-old woman succumbed to head injuries after huge branches of a mayflower tree on the new Superintendent of Police campus in Ram Nagar fell on her on Tuesday afternoon. Police said, Palaniammal, wife of Chidambaram of Rathinapuri, who was running a shop opposite the SP's office, died at the CMCH without responding to treatment on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, as rains battered Salem on Tuesday night, a couple suffered electrocution due to the rains and died at P.N. Patti near Mettur. When 45-year-old labourer, P.Sellamuthu hung his washings on the clothesline in front of his house, he suffered an electric shock due to electricity leakage following heavy rains and wind, As his wife, Kalaivani, 38, rushed to rescue him, she too suffered a shock. Within minutes the couple lay lifeless, leaving behind their three wailing children.
In yet another rain-related tragedy, a 21-year-old woman, Sumathi died of lightning strike at Kavundhampadi in Erode district. Police said Sumathi, her two children, husband Sreenivasan and his sister, Bannari were sleeping in their house when lightning struck. Sumathi died instantly 45 year old Bannari is being treated at the Gobi government hospital. With Gangavalli in Salem district receiving 133 mm of rains on Tuesday night, flash floods in Pinnanur stream washed away 95 out of 300 goats kept in the nearby sheds.
