Rains lashed many places in Rayalaseema, a few places in south coastal Andhra Pradesh, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and at isolated places in Telangana. More districts including Chittoor, Nellore, Kurnool, Krishna, Visakhapatnam also received significant rainfall in the last 24 hours.

This is a good news for districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which experienced major deficit during the South-West monsoons between June 1 to October 28, this year. Apart from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, all the other districts in Andhra recorded severe shortfall in rains.

Meanwhile Inundation threat to AP capital

The storage level of 12ft of water at Prakasam barrage can be a threat to the capital city location. Currently, the 12ft water level being maintained at Prakasam barrage is mandatory for providing water to power generation needs of NTTPC, Kondapalli.

Several areas along Kondaveeti Vaagu stream face inundation threat every year. On the other hand, because of the 12-ft water storage level, the barrage structure including pillars and crust gates are always under water with no scope to check the safety of the barrage pillars.

The irrigation department had repaired the barrage almost 12 years ago by constructing a bund on Krishna River. While it should be checked once in three years, the water supply linkage with NTTPC hinders in the regular maintenance.

As a way out, the experts have suggested a Rs 35-crore project of initiating repair work on the downstream side.
