Coimbatore: The infamous untouchability shed that separated Dalit and upper caste customers at an eatery at Panapatti, near Coimbatore, has been closed down. Deccan Chronicle was the first to report the discriminatory practice of providing food for Dalits and upper caste people in two separate sheds at a private eatery at Panapatti village, in Coimbatore. The Tamilar Viduthalai Iyyakam staged a road roko in front of the collectorate on Monday. Following the stir and media reports, the untouchability shed has been closed down.
DC had published a front page report on the two-shed system in its issue dated September 3, 2014. A day later, the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) and other party members raised their voices of protest.“We have received a communication from the Panapatti village that the Dalit entrance of the private eatery has been closed with bamboo sticks,”said Mr T. Ramakrishnan, general secretary of the TPDK, on Tuesday.
However, the district officials have not yet booked a case against the eatery owner under the SC/ST Act, said Mr Ramakrishnan. The TPDK members will stage a protest in front of Kinathukadavu taluk office on Friday, urging the police to take action against the eatery owner.
