Undertrial commits suicide in Central prison
Bengaluru: A 35-year-old undertrial prisoner committed suicide by hanging self at the high-security Parappana Agrahara early Tuesday. The incident happened around 1 am, when some prisoners lodged in barrack no. 5, found him hanging to the bathroom window grill of room no. 3.
According to the jail authorities, the undertrial, identified as Ravikumar, had torn a part of a bedsheet and used it to hang himself.
One of the prisoners from barrack no. 5 while going to toilet, found him hanging from the window and alerted others. They informed the jail warden who immediately rushed Ravikumar to Victoria Hospital.
“On the way to the hospital, he showed some signs of life, according to my assistant Krishnakumar who took him to the hospital. But when they reached Victoria Hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead,” said Jayasimha, DIG Prisons.
Ravikumar was reportedly depressed over his stay at the prison since April, said the jail authorities. He was arrested by the Rajagopalnagar police for preparing to commit dacoity and assembling for the purpose.
These were difficult cases to get acquitted, and hence he was mentally disturbed over few months, said the jail authorities. He was also taken to Nimhans a few times when he showed signs of acute depression, said Jayasimha.
“There are around 4,500 prisoners lodged in the central prison and some of them suffer from acute depression. We keep a watch on them to avoid any untoward incident, but some incidents like these miss our knowledge. We are always ready to counsel and rehabilitate them,” he added.
