Collector inspects rain-hit areas

Collectors visit was marred by residents protest over waterlogging in several areas
Coimbatore: Coimbatore collector Archana Patnaik on Tuesday inspected the rain-affected areas of Mettupalayam and its surrounding places. Amid protests by residents over waterlogging in several areas, the collector visited the affected areas. “With the northeast monsoon setting in, the administration has taken all precautionary measures to tackle the monsoon,” said the collector in a release.
Efforts have been taken to prevent the spread of monsoon-related illness and dengue fever. Relief measures would be provided to families of 11 houses which were damaged in the rain. To prevent regular loss of property due to heavy rains at Indira Nagar, '36 lakh will be allotted from the Rajya Sabha MP's fund to build a wall, the collector said. Ms Patnaik inspected Indira Nagar, and the Sarkarsamakulam and Kovilpalayam areas. She reviewed measures to remove blockages that prevent free flow of water into the Bhavani river.
DRO D. Christuraj inspected rain-battered Vellimalaipattinam in Thondamuthur. He instructed the officials to give a compensation of Rs 5,000 to those whose houses were badly damaged, Rs 2,500 to those whose houses were partially damaged and besides 10 kg of rice and kerosene. Mettupalayam received a maximum of 61 mm of rainfall, while the district recorded an average rainfall of 27 mm. Holiday was declared for schools in Valparai on Tuesday.
