35 per cent excess rain claims 30 lives in Tamil Nadu
797 roads battered within the city corporation limits, creating 3,070 potholes
Chennai: Tamil Nadu has recorded 35 per cent excess rainfall and so far 30 people have died due to rain related accidents across the state, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said on Tuesday.
Pointing out that 28 of the 32 districts have reported excess rainfall, he added that the state is fully prepared for the monsoon, besides announcing a Rs 60 crore corpus to repair battered roads.
A statement from the Chief Minister said that Chennai had witnessed heavy rains, leaving 797 roads battered within the city corporation limits, creating 3,070 potholes. So far 2,505 potholes have been temporarily addressed.
Coal tar mix and concrete patch works are taken up on other affected stretches. The monsoon has so far claimed 30 lives in the state due to electrocution, wall collapse and flash floods; choppers were also used to rescue those trapped in flash floods.
Government has already distributed relief money to those affected by rains and also to farmers who have lost their livestock. Besides the regular sanction of Rs 1 lakh, the government also plans to provide Rs 1.5 lakh in addition, to those affected by the downpour.
In case of those who have lost their livestock (bovine) during heavy rains a sum of Rs 20,000 is provided and the owners of goat and sheep received Rs 2,000 each. Officials have been directed to assess crop damage when the water recedes and twenty designated officers have been dispatched to oversee relief works across the state, the statement added.
