Man sets himself ablaze

The neighbours rushed into the house after hearing their screams and put off the fire

BENGALURU: A 40-year-old man burnt himself to death after a quarrel with his wife in Siddapura in Vartur police station limits on Monday night. His wife, who tried to rescue him, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter also sustained burns.

The deceased, Devnath, who hailed from Bihar, was working in a private company. His wife Reeta and their daughter Vanita, who have sustained injuries, are being treated at Victoria Hospital.

The couple quarreled over an issue on Monday night and Devnath reportedly poured kerosene on his wife first and then doused himself, saying that he would kill her and then commit suicide.

He dropped a lit matchstick on himself and was in a ball of fire instantly. A shocked Rita rushed to his help, but was also in fire. Their daughter, who was watching them, was also injured in the incident.

“The neighbours rushed into the house after hearing their screams and put off the fire. They immediately shifted them to a hospital nearby and then to Victoria Hospital, where Devnath died early Tuesday.

Reeta has sustained 90 per cent burns and is in a critical condition, while their daughter is out of danger,” the police said. A case is registered in Vartur police station in this connection.
