Not changing surnames after marriage

T-Town star wives have decided to keep their maiden names after marriage
Hyderabad: British barrister Amal Clooney and entrepreneur Victoria Beckham are famous star wives that the world looks up to. But there’s one area where one might say that Tollywood star wives have an edge over them.
While Amal and Victoria decided to drop their maiden names, the star wives down South have a different story to tell. From Allu Sneha Reddy to Namrata Shirodkar, the star wives might be more low-key or behind-the-scenes when compared to their international counterparts, but they have decided to defy traditional beliefs and opted out of dropping their maiden names after marriage.
“I actually never paid attention to this at all,” says actress Lakshmi Manchu, who is married to Andy Srinivasan. She says, “It’s more of a personal choice. For instance, my sister-in-law (Viranica) took on the Manchu surname when she married my brother (Vishnu Manchu). I, on the other hand, didn’t because it was more of a work-related choice.”
“I had established myself as a ‘Manchu’ and I love my surname, so I decided to stick to that,” she adds.
Other star wives too maintain that there’s nothing wrong about keeping or dropping the maiden surname, it’s more about “to each his own”. “It was a matter of maintaining my identity, which I have worked very hard for. And I never felt the need to drop ‘Dhillon’ from my name,” says Kanika Dhillon, best-selling author, scriptwriter and daughter-in-law of veteran director K. Raghavendra Rao. “There was also no pressure from my family when I got married; which was liberating. Women are now given a choice and that’s good practice.”
Meanwhile, Upasana Kamineni, married to actor Ram Charan, has retained her maiden name. “But I’m planning on changing my surname soon. I hadn’t changed it before because it was a matter of convenience and I was a bit lazy, I was saving myself a trip to the passport office,” laughs Upasana. “It’s a family tradition, and I want to keep it up,” she adds.
