I love theatre: Kalki Koechlin

While Kalki is happy in Bollywood, she says that her real interest is in theatre

Mumbai: Kalki Koechlin is happy the way her career has shaped up since her Dev D days. “Had I not got the role of Chandramukhi in Dev D I would not have been here,” she says. “I still don’t know what I am doing here. I am a Tamilian white girl in films though my interest is in theatre. I love to do plays. Theatre is important as it helps keep your body fit, makes you confident and it also improves your diction,” says the actress who will be next seen in Saif Ali Khan’s Happy Ending.

And Kalki knows what works for her in the industry given her “firang” looks.

“Directors and producers will always offer me roles that will go with my look. However, I know I cannot get a village belle kind of a role. I cannot turn into a Bihari girl on the screen.”

She, however, is happy with the work she has done so far. “Having worked with Dharma Productions… Dibakar Banerjee and also with Anurag Kashyap, I feel I am privileged to be a part of this industry. Life is difficult for girls in every place. The industry is a reflection of the society. We make films from reality… problems suffered by people. I think whatever problems we girls face in the industry happen in normal office atmospheres too. But this is a place for the glitterati, thus small things become the talk of the town.

“Whenever I have some free time I love to go on trekking, with my family. This is refreshing for me, especially because I am away from social media.”

On her current relationship with Anurag, she says, “We are good friends. Whenever I look for some advice on choosing a character, I call him up. However, our relationship is not easy to be maintained, but we stay civil, and reserved.”
