Bengaluru: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s announcement in his Independence day speech that the Planning Commission will be abolished, has had its impact on the state Planning Boards too.
At present, Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah's close aide, C.M. Ibrahim is heading the board here and seems to have developed cold feet on remaining at the helm of affairs. It is learnt that he has  started lobbying to get another plum post in case the Planning Board loses its relevance.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior Congress leader disclosed that Mr Ibrahim appears  disenchanted  as he seems to be aware that the Planning Board he  heads might lose its relevance. "Mr Ibrahim has therefore been asking the CM to give him another  post, where he is considered powerful. In an effort to dismiss his worries, Mr Siddaramaiah reportedly told him that if the situation warrants, he would not hesitate to pilot a bill which will ensure the existence of the Planning Board. Even after this, Mr Ibrahim is learnt to have demanded a plum post," the source explained.

When contacted a bureaucrat who had a long stint with the planning board,  disclosed that if Mr Modi disbands the  Planning Commission  Planning Boards will  lose  relevance. "The board was considered very powerful and used to help the finance minister in the planning process. With the disbanding of the Planning Commission the country will have to abandon Five Year plans too, so, how can the Planning Board remain relevant?" the officer wondered.
