Kochi: The withdrawal of support to the UPA-I government by the Left parties in 2008 was a mistake, according to CPI state secretary Pannyan Ravindran. His statement is likely to open a fresh round of sparring with the CPM in the coming days. “It was a tactical mistake,” he told reporters here on Monday.
He also claimed that a similar thinking was discernable in the views expressed by CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury as reported in the press in connection with the discussions in the CPM on the tactical line of the party.
But he declined to comment further on the subject saying that it was an internal affair of another party and that it was not right on his part to dwell on it. The Left parties had also failed to convey the reason for the withdrawal of support to the UPA regime and the harmful impact of the nuclear deal to the people, he added.
Mr Pannyan had reiterated his earlier comment that the split in the undivided communist party was a major mistake. The CPM leadership, including Mr. Yechury, however, had rejected the views of Mr Panniyan and justified the split and formation of the CPM.
Mr Pannyan felt that the people at large wanted the unity of the two communist parties. “I hope the two parties will join hands in the future. Otherwise, they will not be able to make much headway,” he added.
