Kerala firm on new abkari policy
‘Liquor cannot be distributed on the basis of income’
Kochi: The State Government on Monday submitted before the Kerala High Court that liquor could not be distributed on the basis of income. The State asked the court to dismiss a petition seeking to introduce rationing system for alcohol and to restrict liquor to those who needed it.
The State made it clear that it had not yet taken any policy decision in that regard and they would be decided purely on the basis policy decision, the State pointed out.
P.D. Joseph of Thrissur moved the court seeking a directive to the State to take steps to lower the rate of alcohol consumption in the State. He also sought a directive not to issue fresh licence to start wine shops, toddy shops and beer parlours as these were also alcohol products.
The policy of the State Government was to reduce the consumption of liquor step-by- step. To achieve the goal, the Government would have to adopted several strategies, the State submitted.
