Six districts to shield capital

There is no mechanism established to face cyclones in the districts

Vijayawada: Four coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Krishna and Guntur, will help the state capital face the threat of storms and inundation when hit by a cyclone like Hudhud. This is stated in the storm surge inundation mapping done by the state government.

According to the vulnerability mapping, six districts Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari will face the storm threat during a very severe cyclone. A large portion of Godavari, Guntur and Krishna district face the threat of inundation due to a cyclonic storm.

The North Andhra districts Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam were devastated due to storm surges from the recent cyclone, which made landfall in Vizag. Such cyclone-fuelled surges in these four districts would result in immense loss of human life and damage to property.

The proposed capital area in Krishna and Guntur districts does not face the threat of storm surges, but towns like Amaravati, Vykuntapuram and others in Guntur district are prone to flood inundation.

There is no mechanism established to face cyclones in the districts and the only partial solution, the completion of delta modernisation works, is proceeding slowly.
