Governor E S L Narasimhan steps in to solve Telangana State, Andhra Pradesh water fight
KCR informed the Governor about government’s decision to file a case in the Supreme Court
Hyderabad: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Sunday initiated a dialogue with both Telangana and AP state government officials and ministers including Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
The discussion was on the controversies surrounding power generation from Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams.
Mr Chandrasekhar Rao briefed him on the stand taken by his government with regard to power generation from Srisailam dam. He also complained about non-compliance of the various provisions in the AP Reorganisation Act by the AP government.
Telangana Genco and Transco chairman-cum-managing director Devulapally Prabhakar Rao also met the Governor in the afternoon and submitted a detailed report on the aspects of power generation by both the governments.
The CM reportedly informed the Governor about the Telangana government’s decision to file a case in the Supreme Court on the injustices meted out by the AP government clearly violating the provisions of the Act.
He also submitted a report on the right to use waters by Telangana government from both Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dam for power generation, with supportive GOs issued by various governments in the past. Mr Rao also complained about the functioning of Krishna River Management Board as well as Central Electricity Authority.
He also conveyed that unless Supreme Court intervenes in the matter, it will be difficult for the Telangana government to meet the future power and water demands.
In a related development, AP major irrigation minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao along with a few officials met the Governor on Sunday and presented their the viewpoint of the AP government.
AP keeping revised order in Dark: Harish Rao
Telangana irrigation minister T. Harish Rao on Sunday accused the Andhra Pradesh government of resorting to ‘false propaganda’ with regard to water levels in Srisailam dam for production of electricity.
He alleged that the AP government has hatched a conspiracy to deny Telangana its legitimate share of water usage in Srisailam. “All the GOs pertaining to water levels in Srisailam have been issued by then undivided governments, headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu and YSR.
They have issued GOs 69 and 107. But, another amendment was reissued in GO 233. Now, they are trying to keep this revised GO in dark.” he said. The revised GO states that water can be used for power production till the level of 834 feet.
“Now the AP government has blatantly violating its own GO with an intention of harming Telangana by denying water and power,” Mr Rao added. He reiterated that Telangana government was only asking for its legitimate share of water in accordance with the GOs issued by AP government earlier.
"We are not violating any norms with regard to water usage in Srisailam. In fact, its the AP government which is blatantly violating the norms by coming out with false figures on water levels.
We will file a case in the Supreme Court against AP government in a day or two," Mr Rao added. Mr Rao said the Chief Minister has directed officials to engage eminent lawyers to
fight the case in Supreme Court.
"CM reviewed the issue with officials on Sunday and guided them over how to go forward to thwart the plans of AP government of harming the interests of Telangana with regard to Srisailam water.
We will also take up the issue with the Krishna Water Board. We will take all the legal options to protect the interests of Telangana," Mr Rao said.
