22 hurt as villagers fight for temple
People of Jillela and Mallapur villages have been claiming authority
KARIMNAGAR: As many as 22 persons sustained injuries when residents of two villages came to blows over management of a temple situated under limits of Indiranagar Grampanch-ayat in Sircilla mandal on Sunday. Five of the injured are reported to be critical. According to Sircilla police and witnesses, residents of Mallapur thrashed a priest, who belonged to Jill-ella, for performing prayers at Renuka Yellamma temple, which is now under the limits of Indiranagar Grampanchayat.
In retaliation, members of a community beat up residents of Mallapur, triggering mild tension. Police said that a total of 10 persons belonging to Mallapur and Jillella sustained injuries in the clash,while eyewitnesses said that as many as 22 residents of the both the villages were injured in incident. Five persons, who suffered seriously injuries on their heads, were rushed to a hospital in Karimnagar.Their medical condition is stated to be stable.
As per revenue authorities, the temple was jointly built by residents of Jillella and Mallapur in the past. But, the temple was transferred to Indiranagar Grampanchayat during elections for rural local bodies held in 2013. Since then, the residents of the two villages are at loggerheads over the management of the temple. Recently, residents of Jillella secured stay from a court over the issue. But, residents of Mallapur are trying to manage the temple citing that it falls under limits of their village.
It is learnt that some residents of the two villages are focusing on the temple considering its huge income. Police registered cases against those who allegedly involved in the clash.
