Protest in Bangalore against demolition of heritage building
Bangalore: The residents of Bangalore staged a protest on Sunday against state government for its decision to demolish Balabrooie guest house.
Around 50 to 60 people, including members of Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC), staged a silent protest outside the building. Singer and songwriter Raghu Dixit and Bollywood actress and singer Vasundhara Das were also present during the protest.
Harish Bijoor, one of the protestors, said the Balabrooie Guest House and its surroundings should be left alone. Raghu Dixit said it is the duty of the citizens to protect the remnants of the city's heritage.
The Balabrooie guest house, situated opposite the Bangalore Golf Club, is surrounded by equally old trees and has iconic lush gardens and huge rooms.
A 'Save Balabrooie' campaign has been launched on social networking site Facebook by The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC) and architect Naresh V Narasimhan in collaboration with various historians.
The state government wants to demolish the guest house and also cut down the trees nearby to make way for a Legislators Club.
