Centre tells Chief Justice to split Hyderabad High Court

The AP Reorganisation Act stipulated that there shall be a separate High Court for AP

Hyderabad: The Centre has asked the Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court to initiate the process for setting up a separate High Court for Andhra Pradesh.

This information was disclosed by the Department of Justice, Government of India, under the Right to Information Act to Gandra Mohan Rao, a practising advocate of the High Court.

The advocate had applied to the Department of Justice under the RTI Act seeking information with regard to setting up of a separate High Court for AP.

Mr H.C. Bhatia, deputy secretary to the department, in his letter to the advocate, informed that the existing strength of judges in the common High Court is proposed to be bifurcated in the ratio of 60:40 between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states respectively. The sanctioned strength of the existing High Court is 49 judges.

The AP Reorganisation Act stipulated that there shall be a separate High Court for AP and the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad shall become the High Court for Telangana.
