Tamil Nadu Housing Board which will be used for constructing both facilities
Chennai: The Chennai corporation council on Saturday gave permission to set up Amma theatre and Amma flea market in East Mogappair. The corporation has identified 3.94 acres of land belonging to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board which will be used for constructing both facilities. The corporation in its annual budget presentation in February had proposed to set up Amma theatres which would sell cinema tickets at subsided rates. It had similarly proposed to set up flea markets where residents can shop at affordable rates. “A total of five amma theatres are being planned across the city, each with three or four screens,” said mayor Saidai Duraisamy.
“Similarly, the flea markets will also be opened at five places in the first phase.” In the daylong meeting, a total of 22 resolutions were passed in the council. These included providing stainless steel railing for a few bridges and insurance for labourers working at construction sites. The Kodambakkam bridge, which is currently being resorted by the corporation, will be provided with stainless steel railings at a cost of Rs1.23 crore. The Kotturpuram bridge, which runs across the Adyar river, will also be provided with steel railings at a cost of
Rs1. 75 crore.
In another resolution, the council instructed building contractors to enrol the labourers under workmen compensation policy or contractors all risk policy to make sure that every labourer has been insured. However, none of the issues was taken up for discussion since the question hour was cancelled. The question hour had also been cancelled in the previous month’s council meeting to express grief over the arrest of AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa also making the session the shortest in the past three years.
