Department of Public Instructions to check 4,000 private schools

Nearly 40 per cent of the schools in Bengaluru do not have a NOC or permission from the DPI

Bengaluru: Finding Orchids, The International School, operating without recognition or affiliation, the education department is now all set to launch a state- wide school verification process to check on the status of all private institutions, especially those run by corporates. Documents of around 4,000 private schools across the state will be verified, according to official sources.

The Department of Public Instructions (DPI), had in a survey done on the orders of the high court a few years ago found 52 schools operating without recognition in the state and closed them down.

But over the last four or five years, corporate chain schools have mushroomed across the state, causing concern. "Orchids is one such school. When we realised that it has been running without any affiliation to a board, we were shocked.

There have been similar complaints against a few other elite schools of the city too. So now the DPI will start verifying documents of all such schools," said a senior officer.

To begin with, the DPI has directed all three DDPIs to inspect the seven schools run by the Orchids group in the city. "The Orchids group runs seven schools in the city. Now that the Jalahalli School has come under the scanner, the remaining six too will be checked," the officer added.

Meanwhile, Mr. A.R.Ashok Kumar Adiga, president, Bangalore Schools Parents Association, warned it would take police action against the DDIs and BEOs, who were allowing unauthorised schools to operate in the city.

We have been fighting against unauthorized schools for the last four years. Nearly 40 per cent of the schools in Bengaluru do not have a Non Objection Certificate (NOC) or permission from the DPI.

But even after repeated complaints no action has been taken against even one school. So on Monday we will go to the police and ask it to action against DPI officials who have allowed these unauthorised schools to operate," he said.
