Tipplers to fight skewed policies

Tipplers of the state are all set to assert their rights
KOZHIKODE: Tipplers of the state are all set to assert their rights for better facilities, against government neglect and the cultural apartheid existing in society.
A state-level tipplers’ meet would be held on November 6 at Thrissur in order to discuss the suppressed rights of tipplers and ways and means to fight against the acute neglect of government which slaps high taxes on tipplers without providing any facilities.
A book on the rights of tipplers and discrimination by society as well as government namely ‘Madyapante Manifesto’ (Tipplers’ Manifesto) written by journalist Gireesh Janardhanan also would be released at the function.
“The book is a compilation of my articles published in a Malayalam weekly and the programme is a readers’ initiative”, said Gireesh Janardhanan, the author of the book.
“It is our first effort to organize and fight for our rights”, said poet OP Suresh, one of the organizers of the programme. “We, tipplers give the highest tax to the state and at the same time also face the highest discrimination”, he added.
The first-ever meet of tipplers has been organised by friends of Gireesh Janardhanan who share his views and also those who are interested in discussing the issue. “The state is getting a positive and negative impact from alcohol culture, but the state government as well as society is highlighting only the negative side of the story," Mr Suresh said.
The book release and discussion session will throw light on the rights of tipplers. The organizers expect the participation of intellectuals who has dealt with the theme seriously including film director Renjith, writers TP Rajeevan and Zachariah, in the discussion forum.
