One lakh messages to request PM Narendra Modi to save lake
People are seeking his intervention to save the dying Ashtamudi Lake
KOLLAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive one lakh messages as part of a people's protest, seeking his intervention to save the dying Ashtamudi Lake here. An open letter will also be sent to the President of India on the matter.
A people’s convention with the support of around 70 voluntary organisations will be held here at the District Panchayat IT Hall on Saturday.
The Samyuktha Kayal Samrakshana Samiti will also forward an appeal to the Chief Minister and Central Tourism Minister on the issue as part of the upcoming President’s trophy boat race to be held at the lake on November 1.
The Samiti will pressurise the Government to mandate water purifier plants in hospitals in Kollam that open sewage to the lake. Planting mangrove saplings will also be initiated as part of the bid to prevent encroachments and erosion of the lake's banks.
The letter to the President of India points out that “pollution has gravely affected the waters and such a polluted lake does not befit the pride and prestige of the nation”. About 90 per cent of the mangrove vegetation along the lake has been destroyed, 97 species of fish, 43 species of mangroves and 57 varieties of birds have also been sabotaged because of human infiltration, the letter points out.
The people's convention on Saturday will be inaugurated by Vayalar Awardee Prabhavarma.
