Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu promises more aid for Hudhud
Minister urges insurance companies to settle claims soon
Visakhapatnam: During his visit to the city on Wednesday, Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the Central government was ready to provide more financial assistance to help Vizag get back to normalcy.
The minister said that the Centre was waiting for a proper assessment report on the damage inflicted by Cyclone Hudhud on the city, following which more funds could be allocated, if needed.
Speaking to media persons, Mr Naidu added that the insurance companies should pull up their socks and work towards settling insurance claims of those affected by the cyclone. He said that the insurance companies should ensure that the claims were cleared within 40-45 days. He added that there was a shortage of insurance surveyors and that he had spoken with the joint secretary (finance) over the issue.
The Union minister held a review meeting with the heads of public sector units in Vizag over the damages caused to the companies and about the progress of repair works. However, he did not provide any detailed information on the damages caused to the PSUs as the official assessment reports are yet to be out.
Regarding the damages caused to Vizag port, Mr Naidu said that while the damages were restricting entry of big vessels in the port, restoration works were going on and it had been ensured that small vessels could enter, so as to keep up the supply of crude oil to the refineries in the city.
Mr Naidu also said that he had directed all PSU heads to spend their Corporate Social Responsibility money in Vizag and not in some other city or state. He has also directed them to make SC/ST developmental activities their top priority.
He reviewed the progress of restoration works at Vizianagaram district. Later, he visited the Korukonda Sainik school, which was damaged in cyclone.
