Power wastage rampant in public places

Streetlights keep glowing even in the afternoons
NIzamabad: Despite facing severe power crisis for the last few months, people seem to have learnt very few lessons from it. Wastage of power is rampant both in the domestic sector and at public places. While individuals are failing to save power in their houses, employees of local bodies like gram panchayats, municipalities, which directly manage power consumption, are also giving a hoot to save energy.
Both the rural and urban local bodies spend lakhs of rupees to maintain streetlights in villages and towns. Turning off the lights saves both energy as well as money to the local body concerned. However, the staff concerned with maintaining the streetlights have been ignoring their duty completely. Streetlights in many of the places were found shining even in broad daylight. Based on the seasons, the timings of sunset and sunrise change and streetlights should be switched on and off, accordingly. But the staff in gram panchayats and municipalities seem not to be caring two hoots.
With power crisis looming large on the newly-formed Telangana state, people are unable to understand how the government staff themselves can be so negligent in saving power.
Gangadhar, a watchman of an apartment on Armoor Road in Nizamabad, said he goes and switches off the streetlights on their road to save power. "The Armoor municipal staff are negligent and they do not care about the amount of power going waste. So, I personally, keep a watch on the streetlights and switch them on and off," he said.
Speaking to this newspaper, TS Transco superintending engineer Prabhakar said they were taking necessary steps to save energy."Many of the local bodies are not paying their electricity bills. Maintenance of streetlights is not our concern and it is the local bodies which have to look into the issue but we receive many complaints on streetlights glowing in daylight," he said.
Every individual should feel the responsibility to save power which would add up to a large amount and bring a significant change in the crisis situation, he added.Similarly, in many government offices too, the bulbs and fans are left unturned off, even when people are not moving at the place.Power is mostly necessary for the agriculture and farming sectors as the standing crops in fields are getting withered.
