GHMC might be split three-ways
Hyderabad: Clearing doubts over the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, the Telangana State government on Wednesday issued orders directing the municipal administration department to begin the delimitation process of election wards under the GHMC limits as per the 2011 Census.
Nearly 22 new wards are likely to be added. This will take the total number of wards from 150 to 172.
The term of the GHMC’s present body ends on December 3. The government has to conduct fresh elections within six months.
Sources said that the government plans to hold the elections in early 2015.
The orders were issued following the decision taken by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao who reviewed the issue with senior officials on Tuesday.
Mr Rao also proposed to trifurcate GHMC. The government has also decided to take up enumeration of backward classes simultaneously.
Of the total wards, 33 per cent have to be allotted to BCs.
Delimitation of wards became essential as there is a huge variation in the number of voters. While there are only 12,000 voters in some wards, there are over 90,000 voters in others.
